Six days after announcing Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo as the first performers set for the 2024 Grammy Awards, CBS announced three more performers: Travis Scott, Luke Combs and Burna Boy. These bookings bring gender, genre and racial diversity to Music’s Biggest Night.

Related

The announcement was made during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s NFL football game (Kansas City vs. Buffalo), just as last week’s performer announcement was made during the fourth quarter of the AFC wild-card game. Both games were broadcast on CBS, which has aired the Grammys since 1973.

All three of the newly-added performers are current Grammy nominees. Scott is nominated for best rap album for Utopia. He was also nominated in that category for his previous studio album, Astroworld. Scott has amassed 10 nominations. He has yet to win.

Combs is nominated for best country solo performance for his version of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.” Chapman performed the song as the final performance of the night on the Grammy telecast in February 1989, so there may be reason to hope the Grammys can land a collaborative performance on this year’s show. This is Combs’ seventh nomination. He too has yet to win. He was nominated for best new artist five years ago, but lost to Lipa. (Both artists have done exceptionally well in the ensuing five years.)

Burna Boy is nominated in four categories – best global music album (I Told Them…), best African music performance (“City Boys”), best global music performance (“Alone”), and best melodic rap performance (“Sittin’ on Top of the World”). He won best global music album three years ago for Twice as Tall.

Additional performers will be announced in the two weeks leading up to the Feb. 4 ceremony.

Trevor Noah will host the Grammys for the fourth consecutive year. He too is a Grammy nominee. He is up for best comedy album for I Wish You Would. He’s the first Grammy host to be nominated for a Grammy that same year since Queen Latifah in 2005. Noah won a Primetime Emmy last week for outstanding talk series for The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

The 66th annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, Feb. 4 from 8:00-11:30 p.m. live ET/5:00-8:30 p.m. live PT on CBS and will stream live and on-demand on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the special airs).

The telecast will be produced by Fulwell 73 Productions for the Recording Academy for the fourth consecutive year. Ben Winston, Raj Kapoor and Jesse Collins are executive producers.

Taylor Swift Mingles With Travis Kelce’s Family, Including Jason Kelce & Wife Kylie, at Chiefs-Bills Playoff Game https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/taylor-swift-kelce-family-jason-kylie-chiefs-bills-game-1235585979/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 00:39:02 +0000 https://www.billboard.com/?p=1235585979

Taylor Swift and the Kelce family were seen watching the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills game together in the Buffalo metropolitan area in Orchard Park, New York, Sunday night (Jan. 21).

Swift wore a unique Gant varsity jacket in Chiefs colors, with stars drawn at the coat’s pockets, and a red winter beanie in support of boyfriend Travis Kelce at the NFL playoff game.

When Swift was briefly on camera during the CBS broadcast of the game, she was at one point referred to as the “MVP” — the “Most Valuable Princess of Chiefs Kingdom.”

In other videos from Highmark Stadium that made their way to social media, the pop star was shown hanging out with Travis’ brother, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jason Kelce, and Jason’s wife, Kylie. Travis and Jason’s parents, Donna and Ed, were also by their side in the suite they shared.

Swift — who’s been spending her weekends cheering on Travis, tight end for the Chiefs — also brought a couple of her friends to the game in Buffalo: Cara Delevigne and Ashley Avignone. Last weekend Swift braved the cold in below-zero temperatures in Kansas City.

At Sunday’s game, Swifties were apparently in for a tasty treat, as it was reported that there would be menu items inspired by the singer at the stadium, provided by the Bills’ food service partner, Delaware North. Food options included “Bad Blood” Waffle Fries and the “Karma” Quesadilla.

In just weeks Swift will resume her Eras Tour, starting with performances in Tokyo from Feb. 7-10 before she heads to Australia and Singapore.

Her latest album release, 1989 (Taylor’s Version), recently surpassed two million in sales.

Man Arrested Near Taylor Swift’s NYC Townhouse After Reported Break-In Attempt https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/taylor-swift-nyc-home-break-in-arrest-report-1235585974/ Sun, 21 Jan 2024 23:25:13 +0000 https://www.billboard.com/?p=1235585974

Taylor Swift’s townhouse in New York City appears to have been the target of another break-in attempt, this time by a man who was arrested near the singer’s Tribeca home Saturday (Jan. 20) as police responded to a report of a disorderly person.

Witnesses said the man tried but failed to enter the townhouse in the early afternoon, the New York Post reported.

Police would not confirm a break-in attempt at Swift’s home, but officers arrested a man on the same street when they were told he tried to open a door to a building, an NYPD spokesperson said Sunday. The man was charged on an unrelated 2017 warrant out of Brooklyn for allegedly failing to answer a summons, the spokesperson said.

Authorities did not release the man’s name.

An email seeking comment was sent Sunday to a representative for the “Anti-Hero” singer. It wasn’t clear if she was at the home at the time. She traveled Sunday to the Buffalo, New York, area, where her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, was set to play against the Buffalo Bills in an NFL playoff game in the evening.

The Tribeca townhouse has been the scene of several other break-ins and attempts when Swift wasn’t there, including some by alleged stalkers.

In 2022, a man was charged with trespassing and stalking after authorities said he entered two Tribeca residences linked to Swift. Also that year, a man was arrested for crashing a car into the townhouse and reportedly told police he wouldn’t leave until he met with Swift.

Related

In 2018, another man broke into her townhouse and took a nap, police said. The same man was charged a year later with another break-in at the building after serving a jail sentence.

Police say alleged stalkers have also been arrested at some of her other homes, including ones in Beverly Hills, California, and Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

Fans Choose Green Day’s ‘Saviors’ as This Week’s Favorite New Music https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/green-day-saviors-voted-best-new-music-1235585956/ Sun, 21 Jan 2024 20:54:49 +0000 https://www.billboard.com/?p=1235585956

Green Day‘s Saviors has topped this week’s new music poll.

Music fans voted in a poll published Friday (Jan. 19) on Billboard, choosing the veteran pop-punk trio’s 14th studio album as their favorite new music release of the past week.

Related

Saviors brought in almost 27% of the vote, beating out new music by Kygo and Ava Max (“Whatever”), Nicki Minaj featuring Future (“Press Play”), Norah Jones (“Running”), Bleachers (“Tiny Moves”), and others.

Nearly four years since their last studio LP — 2020’s Father of All… — Green Day returned on Friday with a brand new set featuring a slew of singles, including Billboard‘s Rock Airplay chart-topper “The American Dream Is Killing Me.”

“‘The American Dream Is Killing Me’ was written by Billie [Joe Armstrong] almost four years ago. But we all knew it was just low-hanging fruit. We’re not a parody of who we are, and songs like that need time to be fleshed out. If that means just sitting back and letting life happen, so be it. And it was one of the last things we recorded,” Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt told Rolling Stone in early January.

In addition to “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” the iconic rockers also released single like “Dilemma,” “Bobby Sox,” “One Eyed Bastard” and “Look Ma, No Brains!” To promote the new album, the band played an impromptu show in the Rockefeller Center subway station on Jan. 16 for a segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Green Day will hit the road this summer to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their major-label debut, Dookie, and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot by playing both albums in full on a massive stadium tour. The trek launches its North American leg on July 29 at Washington, D.C.’s Nationals Park. Rancid, the Smashing Pumpkins and the Linda Lindas will open the North American shows.

Trailing behind Saviors on the poll is tropical house producer Kygo and pop hitmaker Ava Max’s “Whatever,” which brought in nearly 26% of the vote. With nostalgic vibes, the throwback smash lifts its chorus from Shakira’s English-language breakout single “Whenever, Wherever.”

George Clinton Pilots the Mothership to the Hollywood Walk of Fame https://www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/george-clinton-receives-hollywood-walk-fame-star-1235585930/ Sun, 21 Jan 2024 20:24:41 +0000 https://www.billboard.com/?p=1235585930

To audience chants of “we want the funk; we gotta have that funk,” George “Dr. Funkenstein” Clinton received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

His star, the 2769th, is located at 6752 Hollywood Blvd. in front of the Musicians Institute. Speaking at the ceremony on Friday (Jan. 19) were Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, civil rights attorney Ben Crump and songwriter Janie Bradford.

As the mastermind behind the legendary bands Parliament/Funkadelic, Clinton steered the way across the cosmos to such classics as “(I Wanna) Testify,” “P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up),” “Star Child (Mothership Connection),” “Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk),” “Flash Light,” “Aqua Boogie,” “One Nation Under a Groove,” “(Not Just) Knee Deep” and “Atomic Dog.” Along the way, Clinton also influenced a diverse range of artists from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Kendrick Lamar.

Acknowledging all the members of his bands over the years, Clinton said, “Lots of them are here, lots of them not. But for all of them I say thanks and I’m blessed to be representing a bunch of funky mothers. Thank you, Hollywood!”

Here are some additional soundbites from Clinton’s star ceremony:

Clinton: Noting to audience laughter that he was going to read his speech “because I’m so emotional and ain’t no way in hell I’m going to remember all this s—,” the newly minted Hollywood Walk of Fame inductee called it an “honor to receive a star alongside the many notables from the world of entertainment. The old fans and new fans who let the music move their souls; you all know who I’m talking about [because] I’ve always said it’s the people who make the funk. [Also] thank you to the Omega Psi Phi fraternity] brothers who adopted ‘Atomic Dog’ as their national anthem and keeping it relevant for over 40 years. Damn! 40 years. Now as we drop the star, let it be a symbol not just for George Clinton but for the power of the funk, the power of unity of one nation under a groove. This acknowledgement does not mark a destination or even a pause because we’re still going forward. I was encouraged by [artists] like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, De La Soul, 2Pac, Kendrick Lamar, Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers and all those who said funk inspired them. They used the DNA of funk and that inspired me to go on in my fight for musical rights — thank you, Ben Crump — and not just for me but for all [artists’] rights that have been mishandled.”

Kiedis: “Welcome to the corner of Hollywood & George,” joked the RHCP shared that he first learned about George Clinton when a fellow student at Los Angeles’ Fairfax High brought Parliament’s Chocolate City album to school for show and tell. Years later in 1985, the Peppers released their Clinton-produced album Freaky Styley. “For me personally, George became an instant friend, teacher, mentor, a father figure, a co-conspirator, instigator. I love George Clinton with all my heart,” Kiedis concluded before leading the audience in a singalong of a “small spiritual hymn” as he warbled the chorus to “P. Funk”: “Make my funk the P-Funk / I wants my funk uncut …”

Crump: “Now more than ever in the world, we need music that brings us all together. And nobody’s music brings us all together quite like this brother’s brings us together — one nation under a groove. This brother got brothers and sisters all across the globe coming together through the Mothership Connection. He got people in Europe, Australia, Africa and North America walking around in daytime with a flashlight looking for the P-Funk. That’s why we celebrate the one and only, the iconic George Clinton: the father of funk music, Dr. Funkenstein himself.”

Bradford: Looking back at the ’70s heyday of Funkadelic, Bradford pointed out that Clinton “announced his retirement in 2018 and today in 2024, George [at 82] is still working [touring, readying three recording projects and painting]. “My kids think I’m cool because I know George Clinton. I think I am blessed that he is my friend and I am his. Congratulations, George!”

21 Savage scores his fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart as American Dream debuts atop the tally (dated Jan. 27). The set bows with 133,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 18, according to Luminate, nearly completely powered by streaming activity.

All four of the rapper’s leaders have come consecutively, starting with I Am > I Was in 2019, and followed by Savage Mode II (with Metro Boomin in 2020), Her Loss (with Drake in 2022) and American Dream.

American Dream launches with 21 Savage’s best week, by units earned, for any of his non-collaborative projects (surpassing his previous high of 131,000 in the debut frame of I Am > I Was). The set also boasts his biggest streaming week for any of his non-collaborative sets, as its collected songs generated 169.53 million on-demand official streams in its first week (again, beating the opening stanza of I Am > I Was, with 151.87 million).

American Dream was released with little warning, as the set was announced on Jan. 9 and premiered on Jan. 12. The 15-song album boasts guest turns from the likes of Metro Boomin, Doja Cat, Lil Durk, Travis Scott, Young Thug and Summer Walker.

Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200, Kali Uchis logs her highest-charting album ever, as her second Spanish-language full-length set, Orquideas, starts at No. 2 — and with her biggest week ever by units earned (69,000).

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Jan. 27, 2024-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Jan. 23. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.

Of American Dream’s 133,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Jan. 18, SEA units comprise 128,500 (equaling 169.53 million on-demand official streams of the 15 songs on the album), album sales comprise 4,000 and TEA units comprise 500.

Kali Uchis achieves her highest-charting album ever on the Billboard 200, as Orquideas starts at No. 2 with 69,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum — her best week ever — SEA units comprise 38,000 (equaling 51.01 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 14 songs; her biggest streaming week ever for an album), album sales comprise 31,000 (her largest sales week, and the top-selling album of the week) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum.

Orquideas is Uchis’ second top 10-charting effort on the Billboard 200, following the mostly-English-language Red Moon in Venus, which debuted and peaked at No. 4 in March 2023.

Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time falls 1-3 on the Billboard 200 with 61,000 equivalent album units earned (down 1%). Drake’s chart-topping For All the Dogs dips 2-4 (52,000; down 10%) and Taylor Swift’s former leader 1989 (Taylor’s Version) descends 3-5 (50,000; down 11%).

Noah Kahan’s Stick Season slips 5-6 with 45,000 equivalent album units (down 1%), while the rest of the top 10 comprises former No. 1s: Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 falls 4-7 (44,000; down 16%), Swift’s Folklore rises 10-8 (43,000; up 24%), SZA’s SOS drops 6-9 (41,000; down 6%) and Swift’s Lover falls 8-10 (38,000; down 8%).

Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Taylor Swift fans attending the Kansas City Chiefs-Buffalo Bills playoff game are in for a tasty treat.

The 34-year-old pop superstar is expected to attend the matchup in support of her NFL star boyfriend Travis Kelce, 34, whose Chiefs will take on the Bills at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, on Sunday (Jan. 21).

Hungry Swifties looking for a bite to eat at the game will be pleased to find menu items inspired by the singer, provided by the Bills’ food service partner, Delaware North, People reports. The unique food options will include “Bad Blood” Waffle Fries and the “Karma” Quesadilla.

The “Bad Blood” fries are a “2-foot display of spiced waffle fries featuring each city’s culinary specialty,” according to a description from Delaware North, according to People. The “Karma” Quesadilla is billed as “chicken tenders, bacon and cilantro ranch in a triple-stacked quesadilla, topped with pork-belly chaser.”

“Our culinary team has again designed a great menu for the Divisional playoff game this weekend, with several new items for fans as they cheer on the Bills,” Andy Altomare, Delaware North’s GM at Highmark Stadium, said in a statement. “We had a lot of fun with this week’s menu — adding a few new options that celebrate this incredible rivalry with the Chiefs and their star-studded fans.”

Swift has attended numerous NFL games to cheer on her tight end beau, most recently showing off matching Chiefs jackets with Brittany Mahomes at the KC team’s game against the Miami Dolphins on Jan. 13. The “Cruel Summer” singer also spent New Year’s Eve cheering on Kelce as the Chiefs took home a victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. She was also spotted at the Chiefs’ Christmas face off against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Reneé Rapp is taking a little break from music to brush on her lip-reading skills.

The 24-year-old Mean Girls star, who made her musical guest debut during Saturday Night Live on Jan. 20, joined host and Saltburn star Jacob Elordi in a hilarious sketch about “professional lip-readers” who attempt to decipher secret conversations between celebrity couples like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.

“We pick up on extremely subtle lip movements and body language to decipher exactly what someone might be saying,” Elordi explains to a pair of Entertainment Tonight hosts, played by SNL cast members Heidi Gardner and Ego Nwodim.

After Elordi and his sharply dressed parter Bowen Yang attempt — and fail — to accurately read the lips of celebs like Timothée Chalamet, Kylie Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence from recent awards ceremonies, the ET hosts skeptically question their skills.

“Our lip readings hold up in court — we’ve had people put away for life!” Elordi says defensively. Yang’s character adds, “We’ll show you. We just need assistance from our little lesbian intern Reneé.”

Rapp, dressed in a black blazer and white shirt with matching tie, steps out to inform viewers that she’s been assigned “40 hours of court-ordered media training” because she’s been “going absolutely off in every single interview lately.”

The Broadway vet proceeds to show off her lip-reading skills by reading the lips of attorny Kristin VanOrman and Gwyneth Paltrow from the actress’ 2023 ski collision trial.

Renée Rapp‘s Saturday Night Live debut was full of surprises.

The 24-year-old singer and actress, who reprises her Broadway role as Regina George in the new box office-topping Mean Girls movie musical, showed off her powerful pipes and threw in some unexpected moments while appearing as musical guest during the iconic sketch comedy show’s first episode of 2024 on Jan. 20.

With an introduction from SNL host and Saltburn star Jacob Elordi, Rapp opened with a memorable delivery of “Snow Angel,” the title track from her 2023 debut album, which peaked at No. 44 on the Billboard 200. Sporting a white corset with a matching blazer and dress, she opened the musical number by impressively singing while lying flat on her back. She eventually rose up and finished the powerful track with the aid of a full backing band.

Later in the show, Rapp returned with a surprise intro from Rachel McAdams, who played Regina George in the original Mean Girls from 2004. The singer then launched into an upbeat performance of “Not My Fault,” her collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, which appears on the soundtrack of the new Mean Girls movie musical adaptation. Halfway through, the superstar rapper made a cameo from a large-sized pink cake in the middle of the stage.

Earlier in the week, Rapp was announced as a performer at this year’s Coachella, billed just under headliners Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator and Doja Cat.

Elordi’s SNL hosting gig, meanwhile, follows his starring turns in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla and Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, which recently earned him a pair of BAFTA Film Award nods for best actor in a supporting role and rising star.

Next up, Justin Timberlake will make his SNL return on Jan. 27. He’ll be the musical guest for the fifth time as a solo artist. Dakota Johnson will be returning to host that evening for a second time.
